A little yoga fairytale! When the COVID-19 pandemic first hit in the Spring of 2020, I was furloughed from all of my yoga and dance teaching jobs here in Boulder, CO because everything shut down. Before my online teaching took root, I was in urgent need of a new source of income as there was also some mixup in my unemployment benefits, which I didn’t receive until many months later.
Suddenly looking for a new job online, I found that The Colorado Chautauqua was hiring housekeepers. The Colorado Chautauqua is a national historic landmark at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains with private cottages available to rent for both short term and long term stays in Boulder. It is a beautiful perch just outside the city that also nests a Community House and soulful Auditorium. I was elated to think of working there in any capacity.
As for Housekeeping, my most memorable experience housekeeping was actually at my first yoga studio in NYC, The Shala, where I practiced for 8 years and then completed my first yoga teacher training. I couldn’t afford the classes at The Shala so I worked there as a karma yogini (cleaning the studio, doing laundry, covering the front desk, etc.) for a long time! I think I still have karma yoga credits there for classes!
Anyway, fortunately The Colorado Chautauqua hired me as a housekeeper! Shortly after, and with great synchronicity, one of the cottagers visiting from New York (New York in da house!) told me she would love to attend one of my yoga classes. I mentioned this to Chautauqua’s Director of Operations, a yoga enthusiast himself, and he said, “Let’s do it!”. Surprisingly, in over 100 years of its history in Boulder, The Colorado Chautauqua had never held its own yoga classes although it had rented its space for other groups to run yoga retreats there. So we did it!
We started the first yoga classes at Chautauqua in this crazy summer of 2020 – outdoors, of course! We held a total of 12 Sunrise Vinyasa and Sunset Yoga & Meditative Hiking classes. These summer classes sold out within days of being announced and were such a hit that students requested the classes continue – even indoors – so here we are!
Classes for November :
Candlelight Restorative Flow: Sundays at 5:00 PM (November 1-29)
Vinyasa (Beginner/Intermediate): Sundays at 3:00 PM (November 1-29)
Vinyasa (Intermediate/Advanced): Wednesdays at 7:00 AM (November 4- December 2)
Click links above for registration and information. Safety is a priority and we are aligning with Colorado Public Health Guidelines to take COVID-19 precautions including social distancing, temperature checks, mask wearing, and room sanitization.
* Update: after 1 week of this announcement, The City of Boulder announced “High Risk” Level Orange & then Level Red for COVID-19 precautions, so all indoor classes had to be cancelled. Stay well, stay strong, and stay tuned for updates!
Through all unpredictable circumstances, may we continue to practice and to discover our homegrown richness, resilience, and resourcefulness!
