Yoga Philosophy, Lifestyle, and Ethics: Patañjali Yoga Sūtras & Ashtānga
In this fun, interactive, deep dive into the ancient yoga sūtras we focus on the transformative philosophy and ethics of the 8 limbs (or stages) of Ashtānga Yoga, while discovering and drawing theoretical connections with Buddhism and Tantra. You are welcome to work with the translation of the sūtras of your choice.
In each class, we read, recite, and reflect upon select sūtras that elucidate Yoga Lifestyle, Practice, and Ethics, around such themes as:
* the great vow of Yoga
* connections between Yama & Niyama
* 8 limbs/stages of practice:
Yama: restraints | Niyama: observances | Asana: postures | Prāṇāyāma: expansion of life energy | Pratyāhāra: sense withdrawal | Dhāraṇā, Dhyāna, and Samādhi: concentration, contemplation, and meditation | Meditation: with seed (sabījah) and meditation without seed (nirbījaḥ) | Bhakti: īśvara praṇidhānā | Obstacles & Antidotes to practice and realization (vikṣepāḥ & citta prasādanam)
This is a great opportunity for yoga students and yoga teachers to become more familiar and courageous with yoga philosophy, lifestyle, and ethics by cultivating a joyful and playful relationship with the yoga sūtras.
You will be supported and encouraged to reference different translations and commentaries (and you are welcome to use whichever version you have), as well as to memorize and speak select sūtras in Sanskrit while exploring their contemporary meanings in an accessible way that can inspire your practice and your classes.
